Five Tips for Fall Off-Road Driving Adventures

Jeep on a fall off-road adventure

Fall in Minnesota is almost everyone's favorite season. Sunny days, blue skies, fresh air, and meandering drives ablaze colorful foliage. Prepare yourself with these five driving tips for fall weather.

One of the biggest challenges of some fall driving tours is distracted driving. Make sure you are practicing defensive driving techniques and being aware of your surroundings at all times. If you really need a closer look, find a safe place to pull over like an overlook or hiking trail.

Fall weather can be fickle and can present quickly changing road conditions thanks to a wide swing in temperatures and shorter sunny days. This can create slippery road conditions in shady spots, bridges, and overpasses. These areas tend to freeze up or get frosty before others. Be aware and drive slowly, braking gently in these areas to avoid skidding or sliding.

Changing temperatures can also affect tire pressure. Make sure to visually inspect your tires daily, and check tire pressure if anything looks off.

Large patches of wet leaves can be slippery and offer no traction. Practice defensive driving techniques and slow down and increase your distance from any vehicles ahead of you. If you do skid on wet leaves, steer in the direction you want to go and release the gas pedal.

Last, but not least. Watch the time of day and the direction you are driving. Fall means shorter days and the sun is lower on the horizon. The glare can be blinding. Keep good sunglasses handy, and allow plenty of room between you and the cars ahead of you.

Whether you prefer to make this drive in a vintage or classic vehicle, the family truckster, or in your favorite off-road vehicle to really get off the pavement and into the woods to bathe your senses in the colors and smells of fall, safe driving can help ensure your adventure is worthy of an endless stream of highlight reels on your favorite social media channel.
