Forest Roads, Minimum Maintenance Roads, and OHV Areas

Minnesota winters are known for some of the most extreme weather in different areas of the state. This can make for a whole new challenge to outdoor recreation! While some choose to put their rigs away for the winter, we think winter off roading and overlanding offer a whole new experience for off road enthusiasts.

Minnesota is home to the best of both worlds with designated OHV areas and a large network of forest roads and minimum maintenance roads that offer remote forest access, scenic views, and technical driving in snow or icy conditions.

Minimum maintenance roads are public roads that receive little to no seasonal upkeep. In winter, they often become snow-packed, rutted, or drifted—perfect for you to explore with your 4x4 vehicle - whether it is an SUV, JEEP, or 4X4 truck. Before heading out, always confirm road status and access rules before traveling, as some roads may be seasonally closed.

Popular areas for winter exploring include:

  • Superior National Forest

  • Chippewa National Forest

  • Spider Lake OHV Trail (St. Croix State Forest)

  • Nemadji State Forest

  • Beltrami Island State Forest

  • State forest road systems throughout northern Minnesota

  • Iron Range OHV State Recreation Area

These areas are ideal for winter overlanding routes, and accessing dispersed camping

areas where allowed. With hundreds of miles of forest roads, these area offers remote travel, quiet winter camping, and access to frozen lakes and boreal forest landscapes. Winter conditions here can be extreme, so proper preparation is essential. Cell service is limited, snow depth can be significant, and help may be hours away.

Dispersed Camping in Minnesota National Forests

Winter dispersed camping is legal in many Minnesota national forest areas, including the Superior National Forest, as long as you follow Leave No Trace principles and local regulations.

Tips for winter dispersed camping:

  • Camp only in permitted areas and avoid blocking roads or trails

  • Be prepared for sub-zero temperatures

  • Pack out everything you bring in - Leave No Trace

  • Use existing clearings whenever possible

Despite how familiar you may be with some of these areas in the summer, winter camping offers a whole new experience. It requires a solid mix of reliable vehicles, recovery gear, and cold-weather survival knowledge to travel safely.

Tools That Help You Plan & Stay Legal

When we are planning a route or trip, knowing where we are and what land we’re on is critical—especially in winter when snow can obscure road signs and trail markers. Below are three apps we use together, that give us confidence that we’re traveling legally, safely, and responsibly.

OnX Offroad

OnX is especially useful for avoiding accidental trespassing when snow covers property markers. OnX Offroad is one of the most valuable tools for winter off-roading in Minnesota. Even though we travel many of these routes in the summer and fall, terrain looks very different in the winter. We rely on our navigation apps to help us:

  • Identify public vs. private land

  • Locate forest roads and minimum maintenance roads

  • Navigate offline when cell service disappears

Gaia GPS

Gaia GPS is excellent for overlanding and route planning. With a variety of terrain features in addition to mapping, it’s a solid tool for planning winter routes through national forests. Gaia is a popular with many overlanders because of its:

  • Specialized, layered MVUM maps

  • Identify land ownership, water and campsites

  • Offline navigation/Car Play integration

iOverlander

iOverlander works without cell service. This is a mostly community curated database of information that helps locate:

  • Dispersed camping spots

  • Winter-friendly access roads

  • User-reported conditions and tips and points of interest

How to Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter Off-Roading

Tires & Traction

Winter-rated or snow-specific off-road tires dramatically improve control on ice and packed snow. Slightly airing down tires can help in deep snow, but always monitor sidewall integrity in cold temperatures.

Suspension & Ground Clearance

Snow hides obstacles. A quality suspension upgrade improves clearance, ride quality, and control. Zeus Off Road has experience designing suspension setups specifically for Minnesota terrain and winter use. If you need to dial yours in, let our staff take a look at it and discuss your concerns.

Recovery Gear Is Essential

Every winter rig should carry:

  • Winch and recovery straps

  • Shackles and traction boards

  • A full-size shovel

  • Tree savers and gloves

Self-recovery skills are just as important as the gear itself.

Electrical & Battery Prep

Cold weather strains batteries and electrical systems. Test your battery before winter, check all connections, and consider auxiliary lighting for low visibility and short daylight hours. If you have electrical issues, consider having your rig checked out by one of our techs before your trip.
